Waters at Māhukona Landing in North Hawai‘i being retested after high level of bacteria discovered
Hawai‘i Department of Health is retesting waters at Māhukona Landing in North Hawai‘i after a higher than normal level of bacteria was found during recent routine monitoring.
A high bacteria notification was issued for the area while retesting is underway.

A bacteria level of 178 per 100 mL was detected during the recent water testing. State Health Department officials are uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample because the beach historically meets the acceptable threshold level.
There also is no known source of fecal contamination.
Therefore, another water sample was collected and is being tested. Hawai‘i Department of Health will update the notification based on those results.
Visit the state Health Department Clean Water Branch website for additional information about this specific high bacteria notification.
