Police arrest 17 motorists for DUI during week of June 16-22 on Big Island roads

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of June 16-17, including five who were involved in traffic crashes and two younger than 21 years old.

The most DUI arrests per district during the week were made in Kona with 8 followed by Hilo with 4 and Puna at a close third with 3 to round out the top three.

A total of 449 drivers have been arrested for DUI on Big Island roadways so far this year, a decrease of 3.23% compared with the 464 police took into custody within the same time period in 2024.

Kona also leads the per district annual count so far in 2025 with a total of 166 DUI arrests. Hilo is in second place with a total of 148 and Puna is again in third with 87.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and found a total of 498 major crashes have happened so far this year on the Big Island, an increase of 6.41% from the 468 by this time in 2024.

There had been 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities as of June 22 on the island, a 20% decrease from the 15 fatal crashes and 23.52% decrease from the 17 fatalities recorded by this time last year.

Police report the non-traffic fatality count — those not on a public roadway — so far this year remains at 0, the same as this time in 2024.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
