Mandatory 25% water restriction effective until further notice in Hakalau

A significant reduction in spring flows and operational issues with a backup well have caused Hawai‘i County Department of Water Supply to implement a mandatory 25% water restriction ‘ effective immediately and until further notice — for customers in the Hakalau area of East Hawai‘i.

Areas affected in Hakalau include:

  • Along Hawai‘i Belt Road between the 14- and 15.5-mile markers, Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 19), Chin Chuck Road and Hanamalo Loop.
  • Any side roads and lanes.

The 25% water restriction aims to preserve water supplies to meet the community’s drinking, cooking, hygiene and safety needs.

While the water restriction is in effect, customers should stop:

  • Irrigating.
  • Washing vehicles.
  • Other unnecessary water uses.

Department of Water Supply is hauling water to meet essential customer needs and could have to implement stricter restrictions should conditions warrant.
