There is still time to register for the Big Island AIDS Walk, a community event dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and supporting those affected by HIV and AIDS.

The event will circle Queen Liliʻuokalani Park in Hilo from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a health fair until 12:30 p.m.

Participants can walk individually or form teams to support the cause while raising crucial funds for programs that provide medical care, education, and resources. Funds raised during the walk will support programs that offer medical care, counseling, and preventive education to individuals living with HIV/AIDS on the Big Island.

According to Kumukahi Health + Wellness, the event’s organizer, there has been progress in HIV prevention nationwide, with a 12% decline in estimated HIV infections from 2018 to 2022, but continued efforts remain essential.

Kumukahi Health + Wellness is a nonprofit organization focused on providing health services to underserved populations, emphasizing HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and care. It offers support services, education, and resources for those affected by HIV/AIDS, helping to reduce stigma and improve access to treatment.

“We are excited to bring our community together for this year’s Big Island AIDS Walk,” said Cindy Medeiros, chief operating officer of Kumukahi Health + Wellness. “By walking, donating, and raising awareness, we are helping ensure that those affected by HIV/AIDS receive the care and resources they need.”

Registration is free for all participants, and a silent auction is available online, with proceeds supporting HIV and AIDS services. Organizations can still sponsor a booth, and donations can be made online anytime.
