Abandoned Puna structure frequented by squatters destroyed in early morning blaze
A home in Puna reportedly occupied by squatters went up in flames early this morning, according to Hawai‘i Fire officials.
No injuries were reported.
Crews responded to Mapuana Street in Kalapana Seaview Estates at 12:07 a.m. on a report of a structure fire. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a 25-foot-by-60-foot single-story wooden-framed residence fully involved in flames.
“Neighbors attempted to keep the fire from affecting their homes with garden hoses and pointed arriving HFD units to an access point,” according to a press from the fire department.
No one was found at the actual scene of the fire. Neighbors told firefighters the 1,500-square-foot structure was abandoned but frequented by squatters.
The fire was brought under control within minutes, however, officials said the blaze was difficult to fully extinguish due to the structural compromise. As a result, firefighters weren’t able to safely enter the house.
The flames were ultimately completely doused by 3:40 a.m.
Hawaiian Electric was advised of the fire and was asked to remove electrical services from the home to make firefighting operations safer. Multiple hot spots and a secondary decorative floor covering on the floor added to the difficulty of full extinguishment.
Twelve firefighters responded along with three engines and two tankers. Officials say the estimated damage is $150,000.
It is unknown what caused the fire.
