High surf closes several Big Island beaches

Several beaches on the Big Island are closed due to high surf that is expected to continue through Monday evening.

Beaches closed in Hilo are Onekahakaha, Kealoha, Leleiwi Richardson and Carlsmith Beach Parks, along with Kahalu‘u Beach Park and La‘aloa (also known as Magic Sands) in Kona are closed.

Additional beaches may close without notice.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a high surf warning for west-facing shores and a high surf advisory for north- and east-facing shores Saturday. The warning and advisory will continue through Monday evening.

The conditions of large breaking surf are dangerous and could cause injury or even death.
