Update: Heavy showers continue to move ashore, prompting extension of flood advisory for parts of East, North Hawai‘i

Update at 5:29 p.m. Aug. 24: The flood advisory for parts of East and North Hawai‘i has been extended until 8:45 p.m.

Two to 4 inches of rain had already fallen over windward Big Island by at 5:25 p.m. and radar indicated continued moderate to locally heavy showers continuing to move ashore, with rates of 0.5 to 1.5 inches per hour.

Streams continue to slowly rise in the advisory area. Rainfall is expected to persist through tonight as Tropical Storm Hone passes just south of the island.

Some of the first major impacts of Tropical Storm Hone are being felt, with a flood advisory issued until 5:45 p.m. today for Hilo, Puna, Hāmākua and parts of Kohala.

Flooding of roads, poor drainage areas and in streams caused by excessive rainfall is possible in the advisory areas.

One to 3 inches of rain had fallen over windward Big Island by 2:37 p.m. today and radar indicated moderate to locally heavy showers moving ashore, with rates of 0.5 to 1 inches per hour. Rainfall is expected to persist through the afternoon and tonight.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapa‘au, Honoka‘a, Pāpa‘ikou, Honomū, Pepe‘ekeo, Mountain View, Glenwood, Hakalau, Volcano, Nīnole, Kea‘au, Laupāhoehoe, Hawaiian Acres, ‘Ō‘ōkala, Orchidlands Estates, Pa‘auilo and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Those in the advisory area should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

A flood watch and tropical storm warning are also in effect as Tropical Storm Hone approaches the island.
