Woman in critical condition after being struck by pickup truck in Puna
A Monday morning collision involving a pickup truck and pedestrian in a Puna subdivision resulted in one woman being taken to the Hilo hospital in critical condition.
Hawai‘i Island police are investigating following a collision between a 2022 Hyundai pickup truck and a woman, whose age has not been released, that happened shortly before 6 a.m. Monday in the general area of Palm Way on ʻĀinaloa Boulevard in ʻĀinaloa.
Responding at 5:43 a.m., police learned that the pickup, which was traveling mauka, or west, on ʻĀinaloa Boulevard, struck the woman who was initially reported to be crossing the road but not in a marked crosswalk.
The woman was found unresponsive at the scene and transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in Hilo, where she remained in critical condition as of just before 1 p.m. Monday.
The driver of the Hyundai pickup, a 36-year-old Pāhoa man, was not injured.
At this time, police do not think impairment or speed were factors in the collision.
The East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and will continue to investigae.
The incident resulted in the partial closure of ʻĀinaloa Boulevard, from Highway 130 to 34th Avenue, for several hours.
