Hilo father, son arrested after police find illegal guns, drugs in home
Members of the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area I Juvenile Aid Section and Vice Section arrested 32-year-old Waylan Ha‘aheo Silva and his 59-year-old father, Darrell Mark Silva, of Hilo, following the execution of a warrant at their Hilinai Street residence in Hilo on Jan. 19.
During the search of the residence, police recovered:
- an un-serialized 9MM semi-automatic pistol (ghost gun)
- a .22 caliber Ruger pistol
- a .22 caliber Model 622
- a .22 caliber Savage Arms Model 101
- small amounts of cocaine-related paraphernalia
- ammunition
- anabolic steroids
A second warrant was served on a container located in the pocket of Darrell Silva during a pat-down search upon arrest. In the container was 31.08 grams of cocaine, within zip-packets typically used for sale/distribution.
On Jan. 20, after conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, Waylan Silva was released pending further investigation. Darrell Silva was charged with the following offenses:
- Manufacturing, purchasing, or obtaining firearm parts to assemble a firearm having no serial number
- Two counts of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug
- Two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug
- Fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug
A bond was posted for Silva’s $110,000 bail and his initial court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 13 in Hilo District Court.
The search warrant for the un-serialized semiautomatic pistol stems from a physical domestic that occurred on Jan. 4 on Wailoa Street in Hilo, between Waylan Silva and a 26-year-old female. The victim was allegedly struck by Waylan Silva, causing a fractured jaw that required her to be medevaced to O‘ahu for treatment.
Waylan Silva was arrested and charged on a warrant for second-degree assault and abuse of a family household member. He was released after posting the $7,000 bail. His initial court appearance was on Jan. 19, in Hilo District Court where the case was transferred to Hilo Circuit Court.
Police ask anyone with information or who may have witnessed the assault on Jan. 4 around 10:30 a.m., on Wailoa Street in Hilo to contact Detective Corina McLellan at 808-961-2276 or via email at corina.mclellan@hawaiicounty.gov.
