Possible drowning in waters off Big Island’s Shipman Beach under investigation

Big Island police are investigating a possible drowning in waters off Ha‘ena, also known as Shipman Beach, the afternoon of Aug. 29 in Puna.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old David Berg of Pāhoa.

Puna Patrol officers and Hawai’i Fire Department personnel responded just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to to a report of a swimmer in distress at the Puna beach. Numerous bystanders and family members attempted to rescue Berg by throwing out rescue buoys; however, they were unsuccessful.

Responding personnel learned that Berg was swimming when a large wave crashed on him, pushing him below the surface. He was swept about 100 yards out, underwater, before resurfacing. Berg appeared lifeless and washed up on some rocks in the bay, where he was picked up by the Fire Department’s helicopter.

Hawai‘i Fire Department medics immediately began CPR as they airlifted Berg to Hilo Medical Center. Lifesaving measures continued at the hospital but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 2:23 p.m.

Personnel with the Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Criminal Investigation Section also responded to assist with the investigation. Police initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and an autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of Berg’s death.
