7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Tonga; no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi

At 6:02 a.m. on Wednesday, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near the Tonga Islands at a depth of 132 miles.

Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi, according to the National Weather Services’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu.
