Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for April 2023

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park has announced its flight operations schedule for April 2023.

The park management will use aircraft to perform various tasks, including monitoring volcanic activity, conducting search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, supporting the management of natural and cultural resources, and maintaining backcountry facilities.

The flight operations are set to take place on various dates and times in April, and are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.

The U.S. Geological Survey also will conduct several low-level helicopter flights over Kīlauea caldera, the volcano’s summit area and rift zones.

• April 11: A flight operation is scheduled between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. for a Kahuku ungulate survey between 4,000- and 6,500-feet elevation.

• April 19, 24, and 27: The park will conduct flight operations between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. to remove old fence material at the Great Crack fence line between 1,000- and 2,500-feet elevation.

• April 17, 18, and 28: The U.S. Geological Survey will deploy temporary seismic instruments and may also conduct additional flight operations to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.
