The man was reported missing around 5 p.m. on Monday. Six Kaua’i firefighters began the search on foot from the Waimea Canyon trailhead. Just before dusk, the firefighters found what was believed to be the hikerʻs blue backpack.

The firefighters radioed to say they were continuing the search into the night. The weather was not an issue, with cloudy skies and light winds.
