The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is notifying Hawaiʻi residents of a printing error affecting some driver’s licenses and state identification cards that were issued in February 2023.

The error is the incorrect printing of the large “Hawaii” text on the front of the cards, which was caused by a hardware change by the card vendor, Thales. The misprint has “Hawaii” in sans serif font, instead of the correct script font.

The correct script font for Hawaiʻi is on the left. The wrong one with sans serif font is on the right.

The error has been corrected.

For those with the misprint, the credentials can be used normally because they have the proper security features in place. The Transportation Security Administration and law enforcement statewide have been notified and provided samples of this printing error and have agreed to treat the misprinted credentials as a valid form of identification.
