Police: 24 motorists arrested for DUI

The Hawai’i Police Department continues its crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.

Police report that 24 motorists were arrested during the week of Oct. 10-16 for DUI. Five were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 788 DUI arrests compared with 837 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.9%. There have been 656 major accidents so far this year compared with 635 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3%.

To date in 2022, there have been 28 fatal crashes on the Big Island that resulted in 30 fatalities. By this time last year, there had been 20 fatal crashes that resulted in 20 fatalities. This represents an increase of 40% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
