The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s second annual Vulcan Challenge is underway, raising funds in support of the school’s athletics department.

Vulcan Challenge 2022 began Monday, Aug. 22, and runs through Sept. 19. The fundraiser is a partnership with the University of Hawai‘i Foundation and looks to raise $75,000 for immediate support of Vulcan student-athletes in the 12 varsity sports programs at UH-Hilo.

“We just completed one of the best overall years in recent memory and this success is due in large part to our incredible community,” UH-Hilo Athletics Director Patrick Guillen said in a press release. “We are truly grateful for the support from our local business community, boosters, fans, parents, faculty, staff and our senior administration here at UH-Hilo.”

Donors are able to select any of the sport-specific programs or choose to donate to the athletics director’s general fund, which helps in responding to urgent needs for critical services. There’s also the option of supporting UH-Hilo athletics sports medicine. Digital forms of payment via PayPal, Apple Pay and Venmo are accepted.

“Our student-athletes are achieving in the classroom at record levels and representing UH-Hilo, the state of Hawai‘i and our community on the courts and fields of play with great pride and success,” Guillen said in the press release. “But with success comes even more challenges as we not only want to sustain our success but also continue to improve each and every day. In order to accomplish this, I humbly ask for your continued support so we can continue to represent UH-Hilo and our great community while also providing our student-athletes with the best educational and athletic experience possible. Mahalo!”

Last year’s Vulcan Challenge raised $223,500, surpassing the set goal of $200,000. UH-Hilo received generous support from more than 400 donors, with huge help of matching gifts from KTA Super Stores and the Taniguchi family and the Vulcan Booster Club.
