Man Dies Following Traffic Collision in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

A man has died following a traffic collision in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

According to a news release, a 21-year-old man died Tuesday, April 19, after his motorcycle collided with a small SUV just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 11 and the entrance to the park. The motorcycle was heading north on Highway 11 toward Hilo when it crashed into the SUV that was turning left into the park.

Identification of the victim is pending notification of family.

The 65-year-old female driver of the SUV was the only occupant and was not injured.

The accident closed both lanes of Highway 11 near the park entrance for several hours. Hawaiʻi Police Department and park law enforcement officers are conducting an investigation.
