Hilo Man Faces Felony Abuse Charges

A Hilo man faces several charges, including for felony abuse, in connection with incidents that happened earlier this month.

According to a news release from the office of county Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen, 21-year-old Shaycen Sabino was charged with abuse of a family household member in relation to incidents Saturday, April 2, and Monday, April 4, at a Banyan Drive apartment in Hilo.

According to the release, Sabino was charged with four offenses: two counts of felony abuse of a family or household member, including one allegedly committed in the presence of a minor younger than 14 years old, and two counts of misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member.

Both felony abuse charges are Class C felonies punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

Sabino is scheduled to make his initial appearance Thursday, April 7, in Hilo Family Court. He remains in custody in lieu of $24,000 bail.

The investigation was initiated by Officer Roland Kuamo‘o with Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Hilo Patrol and the felony investigation was handled by Officer Corey Kaneko and Detective Gavin Kagimoto with HPD’s Area I Juvenile Aid Section. The case is being prosecuted by county Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Suzanna Tiapula.
