Fire Breaks Out in Commercial Property on Bayfront

Firefighters responded Sunday, Dec. 5, to a report of heavy smoke inside a commercial property on Bayfront Highway in Hilo.

Three Hawai´i Fire Department engine units, two medical units and two other units, including officers from Hawai´i Police Department, were dispatched to the 6:14 a.m. alarm. Upon their arrival, HPD personnel were able to force the doors open and enter the building at 118 Kamehameha Ave. to perform a rapid primary search through zero visibility conditions in efforts to find any occupants and the location of the fire.

Flames and active burning were discovered inside Brokenhardened Art Gallery. The fire inside the art gallery was extinguished by 6:39 a.m. and adjacent spaces, including the building’s second floor, were searched for occupants and any extension of the fire.

The last unit on the scene was back at quarters at 8:21 a.m.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not been identified and the amount of damages is unknown.
