Hawaiʻi Among States with Lowest Drunk Driving Deaths

A new report released by SafeWise—an independent review and research organization—ranks Hawaiʻi among the top 10 states in the nation with the lowest number of impaired driving deaths per capita.

Hawaiʻi ranked 42 in the nation with less than three impaired driving fatalities per 100,000 residents. The report was compiled using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and census data to determine which states have the highest traffic fatalities related to impaired driving.

Montana ranked number one in the nation for impaired driving fatalities with 9.15 deaths per 100,000 residents;  New York ranked lowest with 1.65 fatalities per 100,000 residents.

According to SafeWise, car crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of five and 24. Statistics show that one alcohol-related fatality happens on U.S. roads every 50 minutes. One-third of fatal crashes in 2016 were attributed to impaired driving.

SafeWise advises caution when using alcohol and other impairing substances by choosing a designated driving, calling a taxi, or using ride-sharing services to arrive home safely.
