Rebecca (Beckey) Joan Kembel
June 26, 1943 – December 16, 2016
Rebecca (Beckey) Joan Kembel of Waikoloa, Hawai‘i passed away peacefully on Dec. 16, 2016 at the age of 73.
Beckey was born in Ritzville, Washington on June 26, 1943 to Ronald and Maxine Watkins. She had a wonderful childhood growing up on the Watkins family wheat farm and cattle ranch in Benge, WA. She attended Benge School, and then graduated from Washtucna High School in 1961.
Just after graduating from high school, she married Richard Austin and together they had two children: Rory Dean and Cregg Lansing.
In 1971 Beckey married her second husband, Dennis Kembel. They lived in Ritzville, WA where Dennis operated the Kembel family wheat farm and Beckey owned the Kembel (Grange) Insurance Agency. She later owned and operated the Pastime in Ritzville, along with her partner Jerry Allert.
In Ritzville, Beckey was active with the bowling league, the Ritzville Rodeo Association, the Ritzville Float, and she even drove in the annual Demolition Derby.
Beckey moved to the Kona Reef in Kailua-Kona, HI in 1997. She worked for several years as a salesperson at Kona Hawaiian Village (Club Wyndham). Later she worked at Dolphin Galleries in the Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa and lived at Waikoloa Villas, which she thoroughly enjoyed, surrounded by friends and her son, Cregg, and family nearby.
She was involved with the local senior’s club activities and had just made a wonderful trip to the mainland to visit family and friends, including a week-long vacation to Priest Lake, ID where she had enjoyed many family vacations throughout the years.
Beckey is survived by her sons; Rory (Donna) Kembel and family from Spokane, WA and Cregg (Julie) Kembel, her grandson; Austin Kembel all from Kailua- Kona HI, her brother; Randy (Jan) Watkins from Whitefish, MT and Honaunau, HI, her niece; Shay Watkins from Truckee, CA and her nephew; Ry (Carling) Watkins from Whitefish, MT.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was always so friendly and optimist, the world was a wonderful place for her. A celebration of her life will take place in January. Her ashes will be scattered equally between the family farm in Benge and the ocean.
Caridad Wandasan Ancheta
May 20, 1956 – December 21, 2016
Caridad Wandasan Ancheta, 60, of Kahului, Maui, passed away on Dec. 21, 2016, at Hale Makua Kahului. She was born on May 20, 1956, in Bocloc, Abra, Philippines.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Norman’s Mortuary; prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at Norman’s Mortuary; service will begin at 9:30 a.m.; burial will follow, 11 a.m., at Valley Isle Memorial Park Cemetery in Haiku.
Caridad is survived by her husband, Domingo S. Ancheta; father, Rogue Wandasan; son, Arnold (Rosalie) Ancheta; daughters, Editha “Edna” (Arnel Galo) Ancheta, Marissa (Orlando) Itliong; sisters, Cristina Gimba, Melita Wandasan; brothers, Fernando Wandasan, Aladin Wandasan; and 11 grandchildren.
Stanley Podlewski
January 22, 1941 – December 17, 2016
Stanley Podlewski, 75, of Hāliʻimaile, Maui, passed away on Dec. 17, 2016. He was born on Jan. 22, 1941, in Jermyn, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Hamtramck High School in 1958.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Norman’s Mortuary; service will begin at 11 a.m.
Stanley served in the U.S. Coast Guard, then proudly gave 19 years to the Maui Police Department, earning the rankings as Sergeant. He was a tour guide operator who later worked for United Airlines and Mid Pacific Air and volunteered as an umpire, referee and coach for many sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Dorna Mae Kuupio Almeida Podlewski; children, Stanley Podlewski Jr., David Douglas Podlewski (Julie Brown), Norman Keith Podlewski (Verna), Veronica Kuuipo Gomes (Shannon), Vernon Keoni Podlewski (Sara); brothers, Raymond Podlewski (Rose), Stephen Sobczak (Jane-deceased); 10 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
Helen Gazmen
May 10, 1953 – December 17, 2016
Helen G. Gazmen, 63, of Kahului, passed away on Dec. 17, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She was born on May 10, 1953 in Banna Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Ballard Family Mortuary, service will begin at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Norman’s Mortuary in Wailuku, service 11 a.m., and burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park.
Helen was a housekeeper at Napili Shores.
She is survived by her husband, Rolando Gazmen; sons, Edwin (Tonja) Pebenito, Randy (Cathy) Pebenito, Jon (Christine Almogela) Gazmen; siblings, Avenilda G. (Felipe) Tomas, Carlito (Sonia) Gajonera Jr., Ricardo (Ma. Tess) Gajonera, Elmer (Nida) Gajonera, Marybeth G. (James) Hurley, Robert (Heidi) Gajonera, Edison (Verona) Gajonera; grandchildren, Justin, Eliaz, Levi, and Jasper Pebenito; nieces, Dedet, Joy, Dessa, Ashley, Eldane, Crystal, and Amvar; nephews, Von, Karl, Michael, Ian, RJ, Victor, Banjo, Vincent, and JR; grandnieces, Angelina and Madeline Gajonera; and brother-in-law, Edmund (Dolly) Gazmen.
Marvin En Pin Shim
May 13, 1945 – December 13, 2016
Marvin En Pin Shim, 71, of Kula, Maui, passed away on Dec. 13, 2016, at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on May 13, 1945, in Kula.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Ballard Family Mortuary; service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at St. John’s Episcopal Church; service will begin at 10 a.m.; burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Marvin retired from Hawaiian Telephone Company and Costco. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Hannah Fong Shim. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ventula Shim; son, Christopher (Gioia) Shim; grandchildren, Gianna, Anthony, Noelani and Lilly; godchildren, Courtney & Drew Honda, Brandon & Krystal Shim; siblings, Roland (Barbara) Shim, Lester (Janet) Shim, Michael (Norene) Shim; nieces, nephews; and Fong and Shim Relatives.
Ruby H. Yoshisato
April 24, 1931 – December 12, 2016
Ruby H. Yoshisato, 85 of Wailuku passed away on Dec. 12, 2016, with her family by her side and under the care of Island Hospice. Ruby was born on April 24, 1931 in Pu’unene, Maui.
Ruby worked for Maui Pineapple Cannery for over 50 years. After retiring she enjoyed going to Las Vegas and spending time with her family and friends. She was very active in the ILWU and the Democratic Party helping all the candidates.
She is survived by her niece/caregiver, Suzette (Steve) Joaquin; sisters, Kay Walden of Arizona, Mildred Rodrigues of Wailuku and Diane (Joven Pico) Yamanoha of Kahului. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 at Ballard Family Mortuary in Kahului.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. with prayer service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Makawao Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m.
