Kapiolani Street Extension Project to Cause Traffic Change

The Hawai’i County Department of Public Works has announced a one lane, one-way traffic pattern in the mauka direction on Lanikaula Street between Ululani Street and Nowelo Street in Hilo as part of the $13.6 million Kapiolani Street Extension Project.

Beginning on Tuesday, May 31, work in the area will cause the closure from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Work on the project, being conducted by Isemoto Contracting Co., is anticipated to be completed by Wednesday, June 15.

During the time period, traffic will undergo the following changes:

  • No through traffic makai bound on Kumukoa St. Motorists will be detoured onto Kalili St.
  • No left turn from Kalili St. onto West Lanikāula St.
  • The approach from Kapi‘olani St. onto West Lanikāula St. will be closed to thru traffic.
  • No left turn onto Kapi‘olani St. from West Lanikāula St.

Off-duty police officers will be posted in the work area to assist with traffic changes.

Anyone able to avoid the area is encouraged to use an alternate route.
