HPD Investigating Death of Ocean View Man
An investigation into a Monday morning incident that left a man dead is underway.
The Hawai’i Police Department reports that officers responded to a 9:51 a.m. 9-1-1 call of a shooting in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision.
Officers arrived at a Hukilau Drive home in HOVE when a man came out of the house in an “aggressive manner” and began to fight with the officers, according to a HPD release. The man was taken into custody.
When officers went into the house to check for a suspect or victims, Police say the man in custody kicked officers and soon became unresponsive.
Police attempted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until Hawai’i County Fire Department personnel arrived and took over. Attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.
HPD has identified the man as 46-year-old Jonathan Watson of Ocean View.
Watson was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m.
An autopsy was ordered to determine Watson’s exact cause of death. The case is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
HPD’s Area II Criminal Investigations Section will conduct an investigation into the death and the circumstances leading to it, as is standard practice when an individual dies while in police custody. The Officer of Professional Standards will also conduct an administrative investigation.
