Siren testing will be conducted on several Big Island emergency sirens on Thursday. The tests are to check that installation work on new sirens has been completed properly.
The Hawai’i Emergency Management, in coordination with Hawai’i County Civil Defense, will test between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the following locations:
- Waimea, South Kohala
- Kukuihaele, Hamakua
- Waikaumalo, North Hilo
- Papaikou, South Hilo
The new sirens are part of the Statewide Modernization Project. Residents in the areas of the sirens may hear the siren sound six to eight times for 30-second to one-minute intervals.
Testing will also include short blasts, known as “burps.”
Anyone with questions regarding the test should call Civil Defense at 935-0031.
