2013 Murder Investigation Handed Off to Prosecutors

badgeAn investigation into a 2013 discovery of a body in Hilo has been completed by police and routed to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for review.

On Jan. 18, 2013, the Hawai’i Police Department discovered a badly decomposed body off of the “ATV Trail Park” near Stainback Highway in Hilo.

Authorities later identified the body through dental records as 38-year-old Shayne Yoshi Kalani of Pahoa.

The case has been reclassified as second-degree murder. Initially, the case was classified as a coroner’s inquest.

Police say that a suspect has been identified, but no one has been arrested.
