Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of U.S. Justice Antonin Scalia
All national and state flags will fly at half-staff at the State Capitol, at all state offices and agencies, and at the Hawai’i National Guard at the order of President Barack Obama.
The flags will fly at half-staff as a mark of respect for Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States, who passed away of apparent natural causes on Saturday.
“As a mark of respect for Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, including section 7 of title 4, United States Code, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on the day of interment,” said President Obama in the official order. “I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
On Saturday, Hawai’i Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Hawai’i State Judiciary, I’d like to extend my sincere condolences to Justice Scalia’s family. Justice Scalia has come to Hawai’i on several occasions, most recently in 2014, when he spoke at the William S. Richardson School of Law. We thank Justice Scalia for his 30 years of service to our nation’s highest court.”
Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of his internment.
