Honolulu to Hilo Motorcade Scheduled for the Late Senator Kahele
A motorcade for the late Senator Gilbert Kahele will begin in Honolulu and continue into Hilo on Tuesday.
Members of the public are invited to pay their respects to the senator as he makes his final journey home.
Senator Kahele died on Tuesday, Jan. 26 from coronary complications, according to his son, Kai. On Monday, the Senate noted that he passed away “suddenly.”
The motorcade will pass the Hawai’i State Capitol at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Members and staff of the State Legislature, Governor, and Lieutenant Governor’s offices, along with State Department Offices, State Sheriffs, Hawai’i National Guard, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, will be in attendance.
Ke Kahili Nui, kani pu, and the Kanikau will be performed for the late Senator. In addition, flags will be lowered to half-staff upon the arrival of the motorcade and raised following the motorcade’s departure.
Upon its arrival in Hilo, the motorcade will pass through the town touring many sites that Senator Kahele was fond of or played a significant part of his childhood.
A celebration of Senator Kahele’s life will be held on Monday, Feb. 8 at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.
Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Services for a final “Evening of Aloha” begin at 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

8:50 a.m.: Motorcade will leave Nuuanu Memorial, travel via police escort from Nuuanu to Punchbowl and onto Beretania St.
9 a.m.: Stop in front of State Capitol
9:08 a.m.: Motorcade leaves State Capitol
9:09 a.m.: Bells toll at St. Andrews Cathedral
9:25 a.m.: Arrive at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific
9:40 a.m.: Flag Folding Ceremony/Playing of taps by the Hawai‘i National Honor Guard

12:45 p.m.: Flight arrives in Hilo
1 p.m.: Motorcade departs Hilo airport
