Man in Custody Arrested

A Hilo man who was arrested while in custody at the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center has been returned to the jail.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports than 46-year-old Michael Wayne Ortiz was arrested on Wednesday while incarcerated for his alleged connection to a Sept. 11 burglary of a Kehaulani Street home of a 91-year-old woman.

During the incident, numerous items were removed from the home.

Following the investigation, Ortiz was named as the suspect in the case and arrested while he was at HCCC. He remained at the cellblock while the investigation continued.

Thursday morning, Ortiz was released back to HCCC without charges, pending further investigation, after police conferred with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
