HVNP Flight Operations Scheduled for December

Helicopter operations during the month of December within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park have been announced. The operations will be conducted for various tasks and on different days.

Below, you will find the upcoming flight dates, times, and their purposes:

Dec. 7, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., for invasive fountain grass surveys and control work between the end of Hilina Pali Road and Pu‘u Kūkalau‘ula.

Dec. 9, 11 a.m., to transport equipment and camp supplies for the anchialine pool monitoring and hōnu‘ea (Hawaiian hawksbill turtle) projects between Hōlei flats on Chain of Craters Road and ‘Āpua, Keauhou and Halapē.

Park management requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity and conduct search-and-rescue missions, as well as law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and maintaining backcountry facilities.
