Hawai’i Resident Affected by JEM Raw Salmonella Outbreak

Bend, Ore. company JEM Raw Chocolate, LLC has announced a voluntary recall of its full line of nut butter spreads due to therisk of salmonella.

The nut butter spreads have reportedly caused 11 confirmed cases of a salmonella infection.

A Hawai’i resident was among the 11 individuals to be affected by the outbreak in October.

No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported as result of the outbreak.

The nut butter spreads are packaged in glass jars and are sold under the brand name JEM Raw Organics. Distribution of the products between June 2015 and November 2015 were through retail stores nationwide, by mail order, and the internet. JEM Raw is working with distributors and retailers to remove these products from retail shelves.

“We are taking these steps because consumer safety is our top priority. As a health food company, our customer’s health is our number one priority,” said Jen Moore, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of JEM. “Although no JEM Raw products have tested positive for salmonella, we feel strongly that issuing a voluntary recall is the right thing to do. JEM is working closely with the FDA, ODA, and OHA to determine the root cause of the outbreak.”

Consumers do not need to return the product to the store where it was purchased. Instead, consumers should discard any product and its container. JEM Raw will work directly with each consumer to manage replacement of its product.
