NPS Seeks Volcano Crash Witnesses

Witnesses of a fatal single-vehicle crash at the Pi’i Mauna Drive intersection of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park are being sought by National Park Service rangers.

The incident occurred on Thursday night.

NPS officials say that around 9:38 p.m., a female driver was traveling south on Highway 11 when she crashed into a cluster of large ohia trees.

The woman, who has not been identified, was ejected from the 1992 Honda sedan she was driving.

Park rangers, along with Hawai’i County Fire Department personnel, determined that the victim did not survive and her body was transported to the Hilo Medical Center.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Anyone who witnessed or had information regarding the accident should call Park Dispatch at 985-6170.
