HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-two motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Nov. 2 and Nov. 8. Seven of the 25 arrested were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

A total of 922 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2015. That number is a 7.4 percent decrease from last year’s number of 996 arrests during the same time period.

Major accidents are down by 3.9 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 1,298 major accidents have taken place, compared to 1,350 at the same point in 2014.

Traffic fatalities have jumped up by 54.5 percent, compared to one year ago. Seventeen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways. At this time in 2014, 11 traffic fatalities had occurred.

Of the 17 fatalities, HPD reports that six were related to drugs and five were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.

HPD will maintain patrols and continue DUI roadblocks island-wide.
