Road Closures: Traveling During Ironman Weekend

The Ironman World Championship is just around the corner, and along with the excitement of race day, many closures take place, not only on race day, but also on the days leading up to the event and following.

Between Thursday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 11, the following closures will be in effect:

Road Closures from Kona to Hawi

Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) between the Kawaihae/Waimea Junction (Highway 19) and Hawi:

-The road will close from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

-Alternate route to Hawi is Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250), which runs from Waimea to Hawi.

Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway between Waimea Junction (Highway 270 and Highway 19) and NELHA:

-The road will close from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

-Alternate route for traffic between the hotels, the airport, and Kona will be through Waikoloa Village Road, Mamalahoa Highway, Kaiminani Drive (Palisades), and the Ane Keohokalole Highway, race traffic permitting.

Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway between NELHA and Henry Street:

-The road will close from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

-Alternate route for traffic between Palani Road and Hina Lani Street is the Ane Keohokalole Highway.

Kailua-Kona Town and Ali’i Drive Closures

Kailua Pier & Ka’ahumanu Place:

-The area will close from Thursday at 6 a.m. through Sunday at 2 p.m.

Ali’i Drive:

-Kailua Pier to Likana Lane (Hulihe’e Palace) will close from Thursday at 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. Sunday.

-Likana Lane (Huihe’e Palace) to Hualalai Road will close on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

-Hualalai Road to Kahalu’u Beach Park will close with limited access for residents as safety permits on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Palani Road:

-Kailua Pier to Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel will close from Thursday at 6 a.m. through Sunday at 2 p.m.

-Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel to Kuakini Highway will close Saturday from 6 a.m. through Sunday at 12:30 a.m.

-Kuakini Highway to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway westbound lanes will close Saturday from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

-Kuakini Highway to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway eastbound lanes will close Saturday from 6 a.m. through Sunday at 12:30 a.m.

Kuakini Highway:

-Palani Road to Makala Boulevard will be closed Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

-Palani Road to Hualalai Road will be closed Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

-Palani Road to Hualalai Road south lane will be closed Saturday at 10 a.m. through Sunday at 12:30 a.m.

-Palani Road to just before Kahakai Estates Subdivision will close with limited access for residents as safety permits on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Makala Boulevard:

-Kuakini Highway to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway will close Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Hualalai Road:

-Ali’i Drive to Kuakini Highway will close Saturday from 6:30 a.m. through Sunday at 12:30 a.m.
