The Central Pacific Hurricane Center continues to monitor Tropical Disturbance 96-C.

As of 8 a.m., the disturbance was located about 670 miles southeast of Hilo. Showers and storms associated with an area of low pressure are in this area.

CPHC officials say that 96-C is organizing and is in environmental conditions conducive for development. A tropical depression may form as the system continues its slow trek towards the northwest.

Within the next 48 hours, the disturbance has an 80 percent chance of forming into a tropical cyclone.
