East Hawai’i drivers should expect lane closures near Waianuenue Avenue and Bayfront Highway Sunday.

The Hawai‘i County Department of Public Works Traffic Division is scheduled to do maintenance work on the traffic signals at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Bayfront Highway on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather conditions permitting.

Drivers heading to Hilo from Bayfront Highway will not be able to turn onto Waianuenue Avenue.

Also, drivers that are Hamakua bound on Kamehameha Avenue will not be able to turn right onto Bayfront Highway.

Those heading makai on Waianuenue Avenue should expect the straight through lane towards Bayfront Highway to be closed.

The following lanes will remain open:

  • Bayfront Highway: town-bound and Hamakua bound straight through lanes will be open.
  • Kamehameha Avenue: Hamakua bound, the straight through and left turn lane will remain open.
  • Kamehameha Avenue: town bound, the straight through and right turn lane will be open.
  • Makai Bound on Waianuenue Avenue: the right turn lane will also remain open.

Police officers will assist with traffic. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during this period.

Anyone with questions or concerns may call Barett Otani, Hawai’i Department of Public Works information and education specialist at 808-961-8787.
