UPDATE: Bayfront Highway Open, Beach Parks Remain Closed

Bayfront Highway has reopened, according to Hawai’i County Civil Defense.

Additional beach park closures have been put in place, including Onekahakaha Beach Park, Leleiwi Beach Park, Richardsons Beach Park, and Ahalanui Beach Park.

High surf and debris has caused the continued closue of Bayfront Highway Wednesday.

Hawai’i County Civil Defense reports that State Highway crews are cleaning the debris and the road may be reopened if conditions are safe enough to allow traffic flow.

Many beach park areas were closed Tuesday in East Hawai’i, including Coconut Island, Onekahakaha, Kealoha, the Bayfront Canoe area, Laupahoehoe Boat Ramp, Leileiwi Beach Park, and Richardsons Beach Park.

On Wednesday morning, all beach parks reopened with the exception of Kealoha Beach Park and Laupahoehoe Boat Ramp. Civil Defense says the closures will remain in effect due to debris and dangerous surf conditions.

A high surf warning for east facing shores has been extended through 6 p.m. Thursday.
