The Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to a house fire along Kumu Street in Pahoa at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Upon arrival, the single story unoccupied residence had smoke visible from its rafters and flames coming through the walls. Fire fighters, who had to forcibly enter the home, found a bathroom and part of an adjoining bedroom on fire with smoke damage to most of the interior.

Officials say the home appeared to be empty with remodeling underway.

The fire, tended to by 15 HFD personnel and two volunteer fire fighters, was extinguished by 6:46 p.m.

It is estimated that the loss on the home was valued at about $15,000.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Hawai’i Police Department officers also responded to the property.
