HVNP Plans Closures Ahead of Guillermo

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park has announced that in anticipation of heavy rain and wind that has been forecast with the arrival of Tropical Storm Guillermo, several park features will close Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, all backcountry areas of HVNP will be closed. No permits will be issued for the areas until park staff is able to reassess the areas following potential impacts from the storm.

Mauna Loa Road from Kīpukapuaulu to the Mauna Loa Lookout and Nāmakanipaio Campgrounds and A-frame cabins will also close at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Visitor centers, restrooms, lava tube, front-country trails, steam vents and other features of HVNP will remain open, according to park officials.

Monitoring of the storm will continue and HVNP staff members will continue assessment of park conditions.
