Man Charged in Pistol Theft

The sought after owner of an antique pistol with an ivory handle has been identified by the Hawai’i Police Department.

HPD requested public assistance on July 9 when the pistol was recovered during a police investigation.

Officials say the public provided tips that led to the identification of the owner on July 20.

An additional investigation led to the identity of the suspect, who was charged with first-degree theft.

Police has identified the suspect as 26-year-old Chas Akiona of Pāpaʻikou.

Akiona was already in custody at Hawai’i Community Correctional Center for an unrelated matter. He was arrested on Friday and charged.

Bail for Akiona was set at $25,000. He was returned to Hawai’i Community Correctional Center as he awaits his intial court appearance, scheduled for Monday.

The identity of the gun owner was not released.
