Former chief of security at Hawai’i Community Correctional Center Peter Cabreros began his appointed position as warden at the facility Wednesday.

Cabreros took over as acting warden earlier this year when the center’s former warden retired, before recently being given the job on a permanent basis by the Department of Public Safety.

An employee of the DPS since 1975, Cabreros began his career as a corrections officer, where he later worked his way up through the ranks to eventually become the Chief of Security at HCCC in 2002.

“Peter is a valuable asset to the department and is a committed corrections professional,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda. “He brings many years of corrections experience with him to this new position and I have no doubt HCCC will benefit by his leadership.”

Within his roles as Chief of Security at HCCC, Cabreros was in charge of planning, directing, and administrating the overall security operations at the facility. During his time in the position, he also was a member of the institutional management staff, where he participated in the creation of institutional security policies and procedures.
