Restroom Facility Completed at Mauna Kea Recreation Area
Those driving along the new Daniel K. Inouye highway, in addition to hunters and those at the Mauna Kea Recreation Area, have a new freshly completed restroom facility available for use.
On Monday, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced the completion of the project, which is one aspect of the ongoing effort to fulfill Mayor Billy Kenoi’s commitment to improving the park for community use. A picnic area, paved parking lot, and renovations to the bathroom facilities that were already existing are among the projects completed in the park’s improvements since last July, when change of operation switched from state to county.
Kahu Moses Crabbe blessed the facility, located next to the administration building at the entrance of the park, during a traditional ceremony held on Wednesday.
The new restroom facility will be opened around the clock, while existing restroom facilities and the parking lot adjacent to it will undergo new nighttime operating hours from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily.
County officials say the portion of the park that closes at 6:30 p.m. will be coned off and secured overnight. Uniformed security personnel who are stationed at the park to ensure public safety will monitor the area.
