Lucy’s Taqueria in Hilo | Authentic Mexican Food in Hawai’i
Lucy’s Taqueria in Hilo is such a welcome addition to Hawai’i’s food scene! Those who know, know. And, those who do not, need to get to Hilo to try this place out! Lucy’s is the sister restaurant to a well know taqueria in Seattle called Gorditos. Both family owned and operated, things are spicing up nicely in Hilo Town!
If you’ve ever tried tamale’s from the “Tamale Lady” at the East Hawai’i Farmers Market, this is the same family! Lucy, and her mother Marlene bring the same delicious tamale’s and even more authentic flavors to Lucy’s Mexican restaurant. The taqueria meats at Lucy’s are muy sabroso and include; carne asada (Waimea beef), carnitas (fried shredded pork), al pastor (spicy pork), pollo (chicken), chorizo (homemade Mexican sausage), tripas (beef intestine), lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (beef cheeks), and a vegetarian tofu (al pastor style). They support local farmers and ranchers throughout their menu, and some of the authentic Mexican spices are even grown by them!
The menu at Lucy’s is truly genuine Mexican fare with classic items like burritos, tacos, and fajitas, and rare specialty items like Pozole (chicken and hominy soup) and Menudo (beef tripe soup). Favorite items at Lucy’s in Hilo include the Prawn Fajita Quesadilla (13” flour tortilla with grilled prawns and veggies sauteed in a tomatillo sauce, melted jack cheese and fresh guacamole), Fish Tacos, Flautas, Tortas, Ceviche Tostada, Chile Relleno Plate, Carne Asada Plate, and the super yummy Enchilada De Lucy (3 corn tortillas dipped in Lucy’s homemade enchilada sauce, chicken or carnitas, Mexican cheese, onions, oregano, all rolled and topped with lettuce, tomato and cheese, and served with beans and rice).
No matter what you order at Lucy’s in Hilo, you cannot go wrong. The food is tasty and fresh, and Lucy and her mother definitely know how to share the aloha vibes, Mexican style! Odelay!
