Four inmates at the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center attempted to escape early Saturday morning.

According to the Hawai’i Department of Public Safety, the four inmates used a piece of furniture to ram a door open in their housing unit at about 2 a.m. Upon exiting the door, DPS says the group was restrained outside of the unit by corrections officers. They did not get outside of HCCC perimeters.

After restraining the four inmates, identified as Malaki McBride, Airiel Jost, Douglas Kamiola, and Kawaipuna Noa, a lockdown was initiated. No injuries were reported in the incident.

DPS says an Investigation into the situation is being conducted.

“Staff immediately implemented crisis response procedures to safely end the situation and prevent the escape,” said PSD Director Nolan Espinda.  “I commend the staff for their quick reaction and a job well done”.

Due to the incident, family visits at HCCC have been canceled for Saturday and will be rescheduled for Sunday.

Hale Nani, HCCC’s reintegration and work release center located five miles away, will hold visits today.
