Akaka Falls State Park will be under a new parking fee operating company beginning Saturday, April 25.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks entered into an interim permit agreement with Diamond Parking Services LLC.

According to DNLR officials, Diamond Parking Services operated at the park in 2012, and due to the company’s familiarity with the parking at Akaka Falls, it is able to begin on short notice following the bankruptcy of the parks former operator.

Diamond Parking Services will take over parking and fee collection for commercial tour operators and non-residents. The cost remains the same at $5 per vehicle or $1 per person if not using the provided parking lot. Residents do not pay fees.

At a May 8 meeting, the State Parks division will seek Board of Land and Natural Resources approval of a formal agreement seeking a new, longer term competitive bidding process.

Moana Parking Management, LLC, who previously provided the service, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection on April 17. Diamond Parking Services will pay the state a percentage of fees collected, following similar terms that Moana Parking Management did, according to DLNR.

The company will also take over parking services for Nuuanu Pali State Wayside on Oahu.
