HPD Announces Merrie Monarch Traffic Pattern

A one-way traffic pattern will be temporarily put in effect along Kalanikoa Street in Hilo beginning at 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 and lasting through Sunday, April 12.

The Hawai’i Police Department announced the closure as a result of the 52nd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, happening at the Edith Kanakaole Tennis Stadium.

During the change in traffic pattern, vehicles will be allowed to flow in the makai, or north, direction on Kalanikoa Street between Pi’ilani Street and Kuawa Street.

Drivers traveling west on Pi’ilani Street will be able to turn right onto Kalanikoa Street. Those who are driving on Pi’ilani Street will also be able to make a left turn onto Kalanikoa Street.

Police say that both right and left turns will be allowed to one-way traffic on Kalanikoa Street in order to access the Ho’olulu Complex and area businesses.

Traffic along Manono, Kuawa and Pi’ilani streets will remain in regular two-way traffic patterns.
