HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Twenty-one motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between March 23 and March 29. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
The overall number of DUI arrests continues to remain down by 27.6 percent in 2015 with 234 arrests, in comparison to 2014’s 323 arrests during the same time period.
Major accidents this year have decreased by 17.5 percent since last year. So far, 344 major accidents have occurred, compared to 417 at the same time last year.
Six traffic fatalities have occurred as a result of a motor vehicle incident on the Big Island in 2015. Two of the deaths were related to drugs. During the same time period last year, three deaths had occurred as a result of traffic incidents. Traffic fatalities are up by 50 percent since 2014.
HPD officers will continue DUI roadblocks and patrols throughout the island.
