UPDATE: Kulani on Lockdown Friday Following Inmate Disturbance

The Department of Public Safety announced Saturday afternoon that the lockdown at Kulani Correctional Facility was lifted Saturday morning.

A Kulani Correctional Facility inmate refused to go into his dorm Friday evening, causing the facility to go into a lockdown.

According to Department of Public Safety officials, the incident happened at about 6:50 p.m. on Friday. The incident involved an inmate who refused to return to his dorm, causing other inmates to leave their areas to see what was happening.

Staff members at the minimum security facility immediately implemented crisis response procedures and the situation ended peacefully. Hawai’i Community Correction Center, State Sheriffs, and the Hawai’i Police Department were all notified in case assistance would be needed.

All inmates were sent back to their dorms and a lockdown was initiated at the facility.

Officials say that no injuries were reported and that all inmates were accounted for.

Circumstances of the situation are under investigation.
