Camping permits for Waimanu in North Kohala will be canceled for Friday, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and in cooperation with Hawai’i County Civil Defense. The Waimanu trail will also be closed. The closures will last through the weekend.

A storm that is forecasted to bring high winds, rising waters, and flash flooding is the cause of the cancellation and closure. Should long sustained rains occur, stream levels are likely to rise, according to officials, and the conditions would present a safety hazard for hikers crossing the streams.

Officials advise that individuals never attempt to cross a flooded stream, instead, remain on higher ground and wait for water to subside.

“We are cancelling all camping permits and the remote Waimanu trail until after the storm has passed and the trail can be inspected and made safe again,” Hans Sin, DOFAW wildlife biologist and manager for Hawai’i Island said.
