UPDATE: Fire at Waiakea Uka Gym Under Investigation

The County of Hawai’i’s Department of Parks and Recreation is moving an intercession program that was scheduled to be held at the Stanley Costales Waiākea-Uka Gymnasium.

The program, starting on Dec. 22 and running through Jan. 5, is being moved to Andrews Gym, located on the Waiākeawaena Park grounds. The winter intercession classes go from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. None of the dates or times have changed due to the fire.

First through sixth grade student are invited to enroll for the classes.

A fire at the Stanley Costales Waiākea-Uka Gymnasium has led to a Hawai’i Police Department investigation.

Around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, HPD and the Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to a fire at the gym, located in Hilo. Upon arrival, officials found the fire concentrated in the northwest corner of the building. The fire was extinguished shortly after.

The fire remains under investigation, as the cause is unknown. Damage from the fire is estimated at $65,000.
