The Hawai’i Police Department has arrested and charged 36-year-old Richard Mattos Jr. in connection to an encounter involving a handgun and machete at a home on the 1100 block of Ainaola Drive in Hilo.

South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of a weapons incident at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a HPD release, a 59-year-old man reported that an unknown man entered his home with a handgun in one hand and a machete in the other. The suspect pointed the gun at the victim and ordered him into the victim’s pickup truck. The intruder ended up fleeing on foot when the victim’s dog barked.

Police located and arrested Mattos at a home on the next block 40 minutes later.  At that time, police also recovered a loaded .22 caliber revolver and a machete.

Thursday at 11:45 a.m., detectives charged Mattos with first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening, unlawful imprisonment, and three firearms offenses.

Mattos’ bail was set at $145,000. He remains at the cellbock pending his initial court appearance, scheduled for Friday.
